The Outside World

By Kevin In 85mm, Flash, Posed, With Mom

20120720-_MG_7009-EditLast Wednesday marked 3 weeks! It’s all been somewhat of a blur, which is why I’m glad I’m taking pictures along the way. At the one year mark I’m going to put a photo book together of all the finals and some extras from the first year — it’ll be great to look back on.

Over the past week or so we’ve been taking Noelle out a lot more. She’s been on walks with us in the neighborhood, she went to her first restaurant, and she’s gone shopping with her mom for new clothes (Lord, help me).

So what better way to kick off Noelle’s adventures into the outside world than her first outdoor photo? I also wanted to get mom in the shot since she hasn’t been featured here yet, save for her shadowy — not to be confused with shady — appearance in Hold Me Close.

I just received two new softboxes recently, the 43″ Apollo Orb and the 50″ Apollo JS. I’m switching to the Apollo line of modifiers for two reasons: You can use either studio strobes or speedlights without any special adapters and they’re super light and portable. I got the Orb first so I figured I’d try it out first.

The Orb is an octagon so it produces a round catchlight in the eyes — unlike traditional square softboxes. You can see it in Kat’s eyes in the image above. It was placed camera right, almost directly across from the direction the sun was hitting her on the backside (which provides the rim and hair light).

Inside the Orb was an LP160 on its lowest power setting. So two lights — the sun as rim and the Orb as key. If you’re ever outdoors and need to shoot a quick portrait put the subjects back to the sun angled a bit and set up a light or reflector opposite the sun on the front side. Quick and easy every time.

Other Gear: Canon 7D & Canon 85mm 1.8
